Protect Your Skin

Hey There!

It’s summer! I love all things summer. Cookouts, a long overdue vacation, going to the beach or getting into outdoor activities.

With these carefree activities comes exposure to the sun. Personally, I love everything about the sun. There’s nothing like being held captive in an air-conditioned building freezing as if you’re in Antarctica, then stepping outside into the warmth of the sun. Or chilling on the beach reading a book, soaking up good old Vitamin D.

Unfortunately, too much of a thing isn’t always good. In my June newsletter I talked about the damage excessive sun exposure can do to the skin. Things like age spots, wrinkles, sunburn, and skin cancer.

As promised, here are products that keep my skin protected while I’m out and about in the streets of Philly or on vacation.

  • I’ve been using Trader Joe’s facial sunscreen with broad spectrum SPF 40 since last year as a makeup primer and a sunscreen. It retails for $8.99 and is a dupe for Supergoop’s facial sunscreen that retails for $38. I used Supergoop in the past and I was pleased with the results. I gave the Trader Joe’s brand a try after watching a YouTube video made by two dermatologists comparing the two, showing that both products had the same ingredients. Honestly, the less expensive product performed just as well as the expensive one.
  • Like most people, I only used sunscreen lotion while at the beach. Never gave much thought to my skin being exposed to the sun during my 45-60 minutes afternoon walks. I love my scented body lotions and butters, they’re not protecting my skin. I thought, “What if I could find a sunscreen lotion that’s not thick and tacky on my skin?” I went to Target and read the labels of a dozen or more products. The ‘leaves skin radiant’ claim on the Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch sunscreen lotion with broad spectrum SPF 50  jumped out at me. So…I tested some on the back of my hand. Gurl! This stuff is amazing! No lie, nine-thirty at night when I’m ready to jump into the shower, my skin is still soft and glowing. It must be the shea butter and mango fruit extract. This retails for about $10.49.
  • In the spring and summer months, I enjoy using a tinted moisturizer as a foundation. One, it’s lighter than foundation. Two, most of them have broad spectrum SPF. Years ago, I tried the Halo by Smashbox with broad spectrum SPF 25 and picked this baby up from The Cosmetic Company Store. They were having a huge sale. Any 6 makeup products for $60! Now, y’all know I couldn’t pass up a bargain like that! This product retails for $41 at Sephora and Ulta.
  • In fall and winter months, I use a foundation. Clinique foundation is one I keep in my rotation because they include SPF and have a wide range of colors for the melanated sisters. The even better glow has broad spectrum SPF 15. I also picked this up as part of the sale at The Cosmetic Company Store. It retails for $33 at Sephora and $34 at Ulta.
  • If you want to pick any of the makeup products at a discounted price, check out www.thecosmeticscompanystore.com.

That’s it! I hope this blog post was helpful.

Until next time,

Suzette
